Goin' green

When I met my hubby 2 years ago, I jumped on the green bandwagon. He was into organic foods and healthy eating which I have gladly adopted and now we are trying to take it a little further. We try to buy organic/pesticide free as often as possible and recently have switched to environmentally friendly cleaning products. Ever since getting Ernie at 12 weeks old, we go through paper towels like it's no tomorrow. I know that is not green at all but I'm not using my dish towels to clean up potty off the floor or wipe the little man's butt. No way! Since Ernie is always sniffing and licking the ground and close to the ground in general, we want him to be as far away from chemicals as possible. Here are some of the changes we've made...

Whether it's wiping down the counters or cleaning around the toilet, this stuff does it all. Now I don't get nervous watching Ernie intently lick the floors in hopes of little scraps.

This is a given. We wash our pots, pans and serve-ware by hand and sleep well at night knowing we aren't consuming any sort of chemicals leftover on our dishes.

Same goes for dishwasher soap...

We have been using this for about 2 years and it is great!

Now it's your turn....

Tell me what green products you use? What products should I be using? Do you have any easy, inexpensive ways to help keep the earth and our bodies clean?

P.S. I've tried the environmentally friendly toilet paper and paper towels and they suck! I would rather use tissue paper to clean up a mess than that stuff!

Ruthie,
Green works is great stuff! Another option for cleaning the floors that is cheap and does the job is hot water with apple cider vinegar. Also, I use left over lemon slices in my sinks, and tub to pull that "grimey" color off...acidic things work great for removing rust buildup that isn't too bad...also baking soda is another good cleaner. There are "recipes" for cleaning formulas you can check out that use apple cider vinegar or white vinegar...even to clean the coffee pot.

A body cleanser that is awesome is olive oil and sea salt. It works as a good exfoliant and is WAY cheaper than pre-made exfoliaters

I bought Dr. Bronner's Castile Soap in the 32 oz. bottle. There are a TON of uses for it. It's all organic. It's very concentrated. You can make your own all purpose spray, degreaser, soap, shampoo out of it.
I also make my most of my own toxic free cleaning products... which is VERY cheap. I make laundry detergent as well. Costs me about $2 for 5 gallons. You read that correctly. FIVE GALLONS!
I'd look into making as many products as you can yourself because it's SUPER cheap and is probably even safer than what you use! :)

I love cleaning supplies. Show me a commercial with magic cleaning bubbles and my wallet is begging for mercy.

So it was hard giving up my addiction. I can't say I'm 100% (or 50%) cured. But this site helps a girl out.

Way to go! We are green in this household, too. I use vinegar and baking soda for a lot of my cleaning. Best to you.

Excellent! We use a lot of seventh generation products. With four cats and a dog (and a fish), we try to be green (no chemicals on the lawn). We just started the no paper towel thing though, and I am not enjoying it.

I use the same stuff you use! I love all the Green Works products and buy them all the time (I find them on sale a lot!).

I love Green Works products...particularly the smell of the all purpose spray. They work, though, and it's great to feel better about making your home a healthy place.
