Baby shower gifts... what to buy

I am in the season where so many of my friends are having babies. In my missional community group alone, there are 4 babies baking! With babies comes baby showers and baby showers require gifts. After having a baby shower of my own and doing this motherhood gig for almost a year (crazy!), I now stick to a few of my favorite baby essentials as gifts.

Nose Frida
To be honest I was so anti Nose Frida....until Ford had a nasty cold. I assumed I would suck all his snot and have to swallow it myself but that's not the case at all! The Nose Frida is just about the most genius baby product on the market. It's something I would have never thought to buy and it has saved us from many sleepless nights (or helped us get a tad bit of sleep on sleepless nights) while Ford has been sick. Don't knock it until you try it!

Breastfeeding supplies
Before I became a mom I wasn't sure what all the bells and whistles, pads, and bags were for and now that I consider myself a pro (exclusively nursing for going on 11 months), I can talk about breastfeeding supplies until the cows come home. I try to encourage my mama friends to breastfeed since it can be a scary road to walk down alone. Chances are, your college sorority sisters who are still partying on weeknights or your grandma's best friend from crochet club won't be buying breastfeeding supplies at your baby shower.

Swaddle Blankets
No matter if you choose to swaddle your baby at night or not, swaddle blankets come in handy for so many different situations! I love these Lambie & Me swaddle blankets because they are made of organic cotton muslin, perfect for any season. We had to use velcro swaddles for Ford when he was born because he would break out of blanket swaddles but I am so glad we had them on hand. We used these to cover Ford's car seat when he was a newborn in the dead of summer and continue to use them to lay down on the grass to play outside or use as a lightweight nursing cover. Unlike other cotton blankets that tend to pill and disintegrate over time, the more you wash these Lambie & Me blankets, the softer they get! I plan on reusing these for future Hart babies to come.

I am currently baking my little girl and I am so excited to try breast feeding. I also registered for a blooming bath! Something I can't wait to try!

Baby T will be here in a few months so I don't have any favorite baby products yet - but I usually get a few smaller/medium items off of a registry & add a cute outfit!

I think the Velcro swaddles were the best or the rock n play!!

I love to buy diapers and/or wipes for baby shower gifts! They are essentials that you are going to have to buy yourself, so it's nice to have a stockpile in your closet :)

Kaity said...

I'm not a Mama yet, so I always go the practical, albeit boring route and buy diapers. I love these suggestions, though!

Liz said...

Hmmm.. such a tough question! Narrowing the favorite down to just one! I'd have to go with the rock n play! So many naps ONLY happened because of the rock n play. E needed to see me at all times those first few months home & having this in the living room or the kitchen or the bathroom (lol totally mobile) really helped!

I am actually having baby shower is this weekend! It's interesting, because everything we registered for, we are SO excited about using, regardless of how "boring" it may seem to friends and family. Everyone wants to buy the cute baby clothes (which we love!) but its going to be interesting to see if anyone splurges on the breastfeeding supplies or the other "boring" things on there ;)

A couple of my friends are pregnant now, and I love sharing my favorite products with them. My current favorite are Snap Bibs.

I'm not a mom yet, but just about everyone else in my life is ;) So I've been attending lotsss of baby showers! I usually like to buy a few of the smaller items and then add diapers or wipes to the gift, too!

These are all great gifts! I always give the Nose Frida now too!! I might have to get some of those blankets for Weston. He loves his A+A blankets, but he's always looking for more! HAHAHA

My go-to shower gift is a basket of books. I always make sure to include a few rhyming books, since rhyming is so important to language development!

SUPER GREAT POST!!!!! I might have to "borrow" this idea on my blog sometime soon too. Jen (Arizona Russums) is the one who convinced me on The Nose Frida. THANK. GOODNESS. That gadget is the best invention ever. Who knew sucking snot out of my kid's nose would be so much fun?!?!?! HAHAHA

The Velcro swaddles and my baby swing were life savers for me! Loved them both!

Definitely the Nose Frida!

Leslie said...

When I wanted to nurse but couldn't I loved having the breast pump!

I like to go in with a group to give a bigger gift. Everything with babies is so expensive and you don't get many of the bigger things you really need (like the swing and stroller).

I love the swaddle blankets. I can not live without them!! Connor is eight months now and he uses them every night!

So excited I can start entering these baby product giveaways!

Great gifts Ruthie!!! Nose Frida is a must for all baby gifts!

Nisa said...

I am all about practical, and buying what has worked wonders for us. Part of that is the Nose Frida, and usually saline to go with. People are grossed out at first, but I still use it on my 2 year old almost daily. I am the queen of finding second hand bebe au lait covers for a great price too.

I'm not a mom just yet (Baby T is due Oct 8!) but I generally always get a couple of small items off the mama to be's registry and then throw in some swaddle blankets :)

LolaFL said...

Love the swaddle blankets! I use them for so many reasons with my 6 mo old and like you, all my friends are pregnant right now!

Allyson Butler said...

Not having babies myself, my to for a baby gift is usually a sweet outfit combined with something practical from the registry (passies, burp cloths, etc.)

Stephanie said...

I'm not a mom quite yet (hopefully in the next couple of years!), but I always love buying special items like a first year calendar since I'm all about organization and planning!

Skye said...

Two things I found incredibly helpful with my first were zip up pajamas and long sleeve white onesies with mitten cuffs. My daughter lived in those the first few weeks and they were easiest to get her dressed again after late night diaper changes and the little mittens never stayed on her tiny hands so the built in cuffs worked best. I am currently stocking up for the arrival of my twin girls in September.

I couldnt have lived without a baby swing! It made having a little baby so much easier so I could still getstuff done around the house.

I love to give classic baby board books, swaddle blankets, a sophie the giraffe teether, and a fun pack of baby socks.

Caela Scharber said...

I feel the exact same way! After being a mama for almost 14 months I laugh at the stuff I used to give at baby showers! Now I'm all sorts of practical!

Agree with your ideas! I am a huge fan of buying things that most people don't want to buy and something that I know the mom registered for and will use (sleep sacs, crib sheets, nursing supplies). Jennifer

Baby isnt here yet but those swaddles look amazing!

Cori said...

Love the swaddle blankets! And we could always use more since Embry uses hers for dolls blankets now =)

Nicole-Lynn said...

My favorite item would have to be cloth pre-fold diapers to use as burp cloths! We have tons of them, some embroidered, some plain but they are a necessity for us!

Katie McKenzie said...

I always buy teething toys, and some sort of feeding items (bottles, spoons, bowls, etc.)

Sooo true! Eveyone always gets bath stuff, then you end up with Johnson baby bath for 5 years... which I guess isn't all bad. lol After being a mom for a year, I definitley go with the Nose Frida also, moms just don't see that at Babies R Us to register for it! Great post!

I have never heard of this brand before, thanks for sharing. We have Aden and Anais and with Baby #2 on the way I was wondering what type of swaddles to get for this little charmer.

Kailarhoden said...

I agree with you about swaddle blankets. Love them! I also buy a 'good' thermometer. Nothing is worse then trying to take a babies temp and not trusting the thermometer.

Amanda Reed said...

My go-to is the Nose Frida, too! Not a mommy myself, but that thing intrigues me, and grosses out a lot of other non-moms at the shower. :) My other go-to is the Sophie giraffe. Even got my niece some books to go with it.

Todd said...

Swaddle blankets are my favorite baby item! I can't beleive it took my until baby 4 to find them! :)

Amber Albright said...

looks like a fabulous baby shower gift! Things have sure changed since I had a little one. :-)

Kristen said...

I have never used this brand of swaddles! They are adorable.

We tend to stick to the registry simply because everyone has a different taste and the couple has obviously chosen the items on the list for a reason. Things such as the swaddles and nose frita are simple and general, so that the couple has options depending on what's best for them.

I'm going to post a picture on Instgram and tag you. My mom and I took swaddles, diapers, cloths, onesies and created them into a train for my cousin's Baby Sprinkle. It was the cutest! It's always fun to make the gift creative!

What is this Nose Frida? I'm not really familiar with this thing, but I'd like to ask, is it safe for babies? Well, I've never tried giving these kind of stuff to someone who is expecting and I'm guessing I will never do so.
