My baby wears a necklace

Do you love the title of this post? I tried to think of something funny or a play on words but hey this is the best I could come up with. If you have ever seen a picture of Ford (which if you read my blog and haven't, you are blind), you would know he wears a necklace. "What kind of necklace is that?" is a question I hear no less than once a day and I love sharing my two cents on it. At 3 months old we put a Baltic Amber teething necklace on Ford and have never taken it off. BA necklaces are a drug free way of providing pain relief when against the skin of a teething baby. They aren't meant to be chewed on like the popular silicone teething necklaces (those are for mamas to wear and babies to chomp on). How does it work? From Kelly's Closet...

"When a baby is wearing amber teething necklace on the skin, the skin's warmth releases healing oils from the amber (a resin) which are absorbed via the skin into the bloodstream. Children wearing amber is a very old traditional custom in Europe and the Far East. Amber is known to reduce inflammation of the throat, ear and stomach and to fight inflammation, infections and respiratory disease. Traditional beaded amber necklaces are a less intrusive remedy for the pain and side effects of teething, such as lack of appetite, upset tummies, ear ache, fevers and colds. These necklaces are long known for the healing properties of amber which include calmative, analgesic, antispasmodic, expectorant, and febrifuge (anti-fever) functions"

I wouldn't consider myself a hippy when it comes to parenting and I am very pro modern medication but I am willing to try anything natural! We cloth diaper, we use essential oils, and I truly believe in the power of the BA necklace. We have a family friend who grew up in Poland and she said parents grind up Amber stones from the Baltic Sea and put in teething infant's bottles because of their healing capabilities. Let's face it, teething sucks. Your poor baby is in so much pain and their mouths become a water fountain of drool and sleeping, eating, sucking, existing just plain hurts. Teething is rough on babes and rough on mamas so I try to make teething as easy as possible on my little ones. Another question I get asked a lot is, "does the necklace work?" and here is my answer. I don't know teething without it and I am NOT willing to try it out. What got me so interested in the BA necklaces is seeing first hand out it cleared up a nasty drool/teething rash on my 5 month old niece within 2 hours of putting on the necklace. Yes Ford is still cranky and drooly while teething but when I read on mommy boards about kids his age who won't sleep a wink while getting teeth, I have to give it to the necklace. We've never had an issue of night waking while teething and Ford is a pretty good teether in comparison to what I see others go through. I truly believe the necklace provides relief for his shifting and moving mouth.

I've heard some people bash the necklaces because of safety reasons but there is no way I would risk my son's life over a necklace if that was the case. They are knotted between each bead and designed not to break or cause choking. Some parents take them off at night (but that's when I feel like babies need the most pain relief) and some choose for baby to wear them around the ankle.

We put a teething necklace on Turner at 6 months old and swear by it. Turner also sleeps through the night just fine while teething. Doesn't wake up at all. Lately he's been ripping it off so it's a struggle to find where he left it...but I always put it back on because I can't imagine a teething child without it. I hope I win since I'll need one for baby #2 on the way :)

Teething hasn't started full force for us yet so we are getting away with teething rings/toys.

My 4 month old hasn't started teething quite yet, but I think we're close! I'm really looking forward to trying the amber necklace.

Thanks for the giveaway! Did you ever take the necklace off Ford? I thought I read when he was younger you did?

We use Tylenol and Hyland's Teething tablets. Finn started teething at 4.5 months and had all of his teeth (except his two year molars)by 14 months.

Our son isn't born yet, so I don't have any experience with teething just yet, but I'd love to try this necklace when it comes time!

We didn't have to use much.....just a little tylenol. Gaby's teething pain was pretty minor. I consider her very lucky!

I am a first time mama to a sweet 5 month old who is right in the throes of teething! He has his two bottom teeth in front and his two top teeth are just about ready to break through. So far we have used all natural teething tablets and he also loves to chew on a cold, wet washcloth. We pop it in the freezer for a few minutes and it's almost instant relief for him. I have been looking into the amber necklaces and would love to win this one!

I've never used a necklace before. We tried the teething tablets and that was a temporary fix but I would love to try this!!!

Nursing! Honestly it's the only thing that works sometimes ! I ordered one on Amazon & it was plastic & came without the certificate. I was super bummed :( would love this one !

I am so glad you wrote this post. I have always wondered about Ford's necklace. I thought it was just a handsome piece, I didn't know there was actual functionality to it! Good to know! I'll have to get one of these soon as Mr. Declan will be in this stage in a couple of months. :/

I don't have a baby yet, but I can't help planning for the future :)

Right now we use orajel but I don't like to use it at night. And starting this past week my sweet girl is having such a hard time teething! She doesn't want to eat or sleep!

Always love when you write these type of posts. Before following you, there were some tips and tricks I knew, but I've learned so much from you and I'm so so glad!! I feel like our parenting styles would be similar as well. My SIL is pregnant for the second time and I'd love to introduce her to the necklace. Her first child was tough when it came to teething and transitioning out of baby stage, so it would be nice to give my SIL a little relief :) Again, I could never thank you enough for sharing all you do!! Oh, and Ford is such a little ham!!

Our baby boy won't arrive until July, but due to friends experiences with BA necklaces we are already planning on having him wear one once those little teeth start popping up!

Love my BA teething necklace! You recommended one probably a year ago, and it's the best thing ever! We also get the question almost daily about why he has a necklace on.

My parents give my little sibs who are teething baby tylonal usually. I have learned about these amber teething necklaces through friends who have kids that use them and I think I am gonna use them for my kids in the future.. they seem to work pretty awesome!

I would love to try a BA necklace for our son. Teething has just begun and so far, its not terrible.. but I hear the molars are the worst! Anything natural like this we can try/use to help with the pain instead of Tylenol is a winner in my book!

B wears an amber bracelet on her ankle and I'm not sure how well it works because she is super cranky while teething (granted she is getting four top teeth all at the same time). I'd be scared to see what it would be like without it.

We currently use Tylenol for my 10 month old who has three teeth coming in right now. I've always wondered about the amber teething necklaces!

We love our necklace too!

I actually just braved the teething straight through! There were only a few nights I resorted to Motrin. I have heard great things about the amber necklace and we are trying for number 2 now, so def will be trying this out next time around! Would be great to have!!

I can't wait to use the Amber teething necklaces on my twins when the arrive! My sister has loved using one on my nephew as well.

Great post mama! I actually had bought one for Helen for the nieces to use and she was simply just uninformed so I sent her this excerpt you posted and she is so excited to try it out now. Rylee has TERRIBLE congestion or URI problems all the time. Not to mention the teething! I told her it would work but I think this post helped explain better why. :)

We haven't made it to the teething stage yet, and I am perfectly okay with that!

I'd love to try this out for baby #4! We've always used Hyland's tablets or frozen fruit in those mesh feeders to help alleviate pain.

Usually just tylenol or advil. My 12 month old only has 4 teeth so far, so I fear the horrible teething days are still to come!

We have pretty much always had a teething necklace on my daughter for the same reasons as you! It helped with drooling etc when she was much younger and I don't notice much drooling now with teething that she's older but I don't know if that's because of the necklace or just luck? She wears it 24/7 - she just accepts it as a part of herself and doesn't pull at it or even seem to notice it. As she has cut her molars we've had to start using a bit of oragel but she cut a bunch of teeth before this without needing any other relief aside from teething rings and the necklace.

My daughter had very little issues with teething, however my son is a totally different story! So far we've been relying on Tylenol so I am very interested in trying out a BA necklace!

Teething has been a nightmare for us and we have yet to find anything that works!

Thank you for this post. I have a son that is a month younger and I've always been interested in Ford's necklace to know if you thought it worked. Right now Hale is getting his first year molars might have to try it!

We use tablets, teethers, and Tylenol. I'd much rather use a necklace because my poor baby is in so much pain.

My son is just entering the teething phase so I don't have any tips or tricks yet, but I am super curious about these teething necklaces!

Our DDs first tooth at 5 months was awful. We got the necklace after and have never really taken it off, save the odd time here and there. She wore it on her ankle for sleeping, and now it's on her ankle 24/7. It's just easier with daycare and her curious hands trying to rip it off. I also don't worry about it being around her neck. We definitely notice a difference when she's not wearing it-more drool and very red cheeks. We haven't experienced any other teeth without it, but our teething experience hasn't been great. I think our necklace has definitely made it a little more bearable!! We're down to the last 4 teeth(canines!!),which are popping through right now. Then all we have left will be the 2 yr molars. So thankful for our amber necklace!

Our first little one isn't here yet, but my sister-in-law uses those mesh feeding bags filled with frozen fruit. I see a lot of babies in the church nursery with the amber necklaces, so I want to have one on hand for my first little one to try.

We used a lot of frozen washcloths for my first little one. Thankfully she wasn't too bothered until the molars came in!

Six month old hasn't started teething yet... but I want to have an amber necklace on hand for when that happens. I use one for arthritis pain myself, and I am a believer.

Im so glad I read your post on the BA necklace! Ive seen them everywhere and seen sweet Ford wearing them and never realized what they were for specifically! I registered for the giveaway too! Thanks for the info beauty!! Just a few more days!!!!! yay!!

We used the teething necklace for a while but he got a fungal infection on the back of his neck, ring worm probably. So we gave it a rest after a while. We started wearing it again after this post and his excema and infection was under control. He has an ear infection right now so I am hoping this will help. I didn't realize that it helped with ear infection pain. I am glad you posted about it because I would have never known. Thanks! Oh and people always ask me about the "necklace" he is wearing haha!

Oh and I would love another one to use in rotation for washing purposes or for our future child!
