I absolutely love the silhouette canvases on my mantle but alone, it looked pretty bare. I had been searching for knick knacks and chachskis but was unsuccessful when I decided to make some pinwheels. They are easy (and cute to boot!) and a fun addition to my mantle.
Supplies
Scrapbook paper (double sided would be best)
Hot glue or craft glue
Buttons or jewels for the center
Wooden skewers
1. The paper I liked was not double sided so I cut out two 4 inch squares and glued them together (use a gluestick, not hot glue)
2. Cut 4 diagonal cuts to towards the middle of the square, leaving about 1/2 inch in the middle
*sorry for the blurry pictures....I had to use my 50mm lens and take them 1 handed because my big lens has a 200 zoom that falls when looking down
3. Take the bottom point of the left triangle and fold it towards the middle. I like to fold the pinwheel before gluing it so the paper gets used to the fold. Repeat with the left point of the top triangle, left point of the right triangle and the right point of the bottom. It seems confusing as I type it but that's why I practice fold before hot gluing...you will see the pinwheel shape as you fold.
4. Now bust out the hot glue gun to secure the points in the center. Press down hard with your finger to let the glue dry
5. Add a button or jewel to the center to spruce it up
6. When the pinwheel is cooled, hot glue a wooden skewer to the back
I had a few mini orange vases from a bridal shower and chose to stick my pinwheels in those since our living room has a lot of color
I even made a mini pinwheel using a 2 inch square piece of paper and added it to a monogram for the mantle too.
