Hunger what?

Okay friends, please don't hate me...but I have one question...

Am I the only one who is not all about The Hunger Games right now?

Take a deep breath while that settles in. Now don't get ahead of yourself and accuse me of not reading the book because I read it. I read it over 2 weeks or so. Honestly I didn't want to finish it. It was so disturbing. And even more disturbing was the thought of elementary school kids reading it! When I watch scary movies I feel physically ill so it wasn't surprising that this was a tummy aching book to read. It was not a page turner for me. I made myself finish (I hated Harry Potter the first 50 pages I read and then became obsessed so I wanted to give it a chance). And yes the ending was intense but I didn't run out to get the 2nd book. And I still haven't read it.

I usually am right there on the book/movie bandwagon (Harry Potter, Twilight...okay books NOT movies) but I just can't get into this one. I don't plan on seeing the movie in the theater (it takes a lot for me to go to the movies in the first place, I like watching at home), I will probably wait for it to come out on Netflix. Elizabeth Banks was on Ellen yesterday and said the movie is projected to make $100M this weekend!

Please don't hate me and unfollow my blog :-) I just want to know what draws you to the book. I have heard of people getting mockingjay tattoos, camping out for days and doing some crazy things for this book/movie. So if you are a Hunger Games fanatic, tell me!

Speaking of books, last night I finished Taylor Armstrong's memoir

I will now watch the show with such a different heart for Taylor. I cannot believe what she went through but her character all makes sense to me now. I am so grateful for a loving relationship with my husband and I pray for women experience what Taylor did. I highly recommend it.

Follow me on Good Reads to see what I've read, what I'm reading and what's on my list.

I think it's a lil toooo much when people are wanting to get tattoos.... But I love a good fiction book!! Total fan of the Hunger Games. It's okay that you aren't :) Everyone is entitled to their own opinions! I will probably see it Sunday, after the crazy crowd. No camping out for me...

Well I hand it to you that you've at least read the books! I'm even more at a loss about this whole Hunger Games thing. I haven't read the books although I do intend to read them on the plane in about a month. I have high hopes because I did love Harry Potter and Twilight (books...Twilight movies are nothing to write home about)but the whole teenagers murdering each other was not what I expected lol. I'll have to give them a go and let you know if I agree with you or if I have a sudden need to camp out for days to get tickets :)
Happy Thursday Ruthie!

Um, no I am not into the books/movie at all. I could not be less interested. Blah.

Happy thursday!

Hey Ruthie! Always love your blogs. I'll admit, I've become a fan of the Hunger Games. I've never ever gotten into Harry Potter or Twilight - the books, nor the movies. So when everyone jumped on the HG bandwagon, I picked up the book and couldn't put it down. And I'm going to the Alamo Drafthouse to see it at midnight tonight. :) They've added special HG-themed items to the menu, I'm going with a few friends, and I'm enjoying the hype of it all. It's kinda fun!

I remember in church when I was younger, parents were all upset about what their children were reading and learning about through "dark" fiction (wizardry, vampires, etc). My mom told me I could choose to read those books if I wanted to, as long as I could keep the distinction between reality and fiction. It's a lesson of knowing what's good and what's evil.

You're right - the idea of teenagers killing each other is disturbing! I'm a little nervous to see the movie tonight, especially because I always tell Thomas I HATE shoot-em-up movies with violence and war, but I've read lots of reviews that talk about how the movie is pretty tasteful (leaving stuff up to the imagination, not showing so much blood and gore). What I loved about the book was the suspense and the subtle love story. I'll let you know what I think about the movie!

I wasn't a fanatic about the books. I read the first one, and it wasn't a page turner for me either but I thought the concept was interesting (and had more depth than Twilight). I didn't read the 2nd and 3rd books for months. BUT, I think the movie trailer looks really good, and any time I'm willing to go to the movies makes Justin happy. I read the 3rd book probably 5 months ago, and I'm not even sure I can remember how it ended? So don't go around calling me a super fan!

I have no desire to read the books or see the movie. I have heard that the plot was a little disturbing, and I don't do good with that kind of stuff. It is going to be 80 degrees in NY today,so I am more worried about catching some sun and what I am going to plant in my garden! :)Have a great day Ruthie!! :)

You are not alone! I too read the Hunger Games and did not like it :( I thought I was the only one out there. The book wasn't bad, but I found myself getting mad, thinking that young kids were reading this book too. I'm a huge Harry Potter and I liked the Twilight books, but I'm not a Hunger Games fan. That felt good to say, I'm glad I'm not alone!

I was never a fan of Twilight. I've seen the first movie and that's it. I've never been a fan of the Vampire thing ever so that's probably why!

I read all the Hunger Games Books. Were they the BEST books I've ever read? ehhhh No. A good read yeah but nothing super extraordinary.

Unfortunately I don't think the books/movies are all that bad (there was so sex in the book which is so unlike a lot of the Young Adult books that get made into movies today) The killing part to me was no different than what kids see in video games sadly...

Nope! You aren't alone. :) I haven't had any interest in them, and when I saw it was getting as popular as Twilight, I rolled my eyes a little. Watching the movie trailer didn't really intrigue me, so, I didn't think the books would, either.

You are definitely not alone. Not at all. I haven't even read the book but I know a lot of people that are going crazy over the book AND the movie. Reading that it's kind of distrubing makes me really shocked about some of the people that are so crazy about it. I don't see myself jumping on the book or the movie bandwagon.

I'm with you in this one. I read them because I was curious abut the hype. I'm more of a romantic so these books were, eh. But I totally wouldn't allow my kids to read the serious unless they were very mature. It's very sad seeing kids kill other kids. But from a fiction point of view it's deff one of the most unique books I've read in awhile.
If people really want to see violence in books, why not educate them on martyrs for Christ? At least they were dying for a reason.

I almost read the book, but then I happened to see the trailer for the movie and decided it was too disturbing for me. I didn't know it was geared towards teen readers. Wow!

I am so with you on this one! The concept just didn't really interest me! Definitely didn't lose a follower here ha

I'm not all about The Hunger Games either. I'm just not one to get caught up in all the hype. To hear that your were disturbed by the book doesn't surprise me. So much these days is disturbing! My parents didn't really limit what I watched as a child and I turned out fine. But I really believe I will have to limit what my future kids watch and listen to! It's no wonder a 12 yr old can be confused for an 18 yr old these days!

Amanda said...

Hahahah. Read the rest of the books. That's all I ask. I'm not a huge junkie for the movies. I'll probably go see it, but I'm not obsessed. And I did enjoy them, but I don't think these books were targeted at elementary school kids (young adult is more middle school aged). But no, you're not the only one who's not super pumped for the movies lol. Cuz I'm not DYING to see it

You aren't alone, friend. I don't get it either. Seriously.

Haha I haven't read the books yet, but I'm going to next week while on vaca.

I enjoyed reading the books and am excited for the movie! But I have to say you're not missing much by skipping #2 and #3. They were pretty lame in my opinion!

To be honest I have no idea what Hunger Games is even about and as much as I read my smut mags, I still have no clue. I guess I better get some cliff notes!

I have no interest reading this book whatsoever. I kinda pride myself in not jumping on those bandwagons. But maybe that's cuz I don't know how to read. Kidding. I can read. In fact I think I'd like to read Taylor's book. I have always liked her and had a soft spot for her in my heart.

I am a little bit finatic about Hunger Games, but nothing crazy like tattoos and stuff. I just love the intensity of the book and look forward to seeing the movie. That doesn't mean that I wasn't slightly disturbed by the notion of children fighting until deaht and I'm sure I will be sickened by the movie, but it's fake....that's just my opinion, but I def wouldn't unfollow you bc you don't like it. :) Hope this helps...

Everyone is different I suppose--I loved the books and can't wait to see the movies, but I don't have any issues with bad dreams or anything... heck, my favorite show is The Walking Dead, for gosh sakes. (read:the goriest show EVER! Lol!) Hunger Games isn't appropriate for elementary age kids, but it wasn't written for elementary age kids either, and shame on parents if they allow their children to read a book with such mature themes. All in all, I am of the opinion that HG is popular because it's a very unique, exciting, and well told story. The fact that it involves teenagers killing each other is the tragedy of it, and also what makes it compelling (but also what makes it very unrealistic and almost science-fiction-ish, which is why the violence doesn't get to me much).

It's ok- I have not read any of the Twilight, Harry Potter or Hunger Games books! I have seen the Twilight movies... I saw the first one at a friend's house and can't not finish a series. But hell if I read the books too!

I am just not into the sci-fi/fantasy aspect of these books. Not sure why, but I prefer reading about realistic things, things I can actually picture in my head. Like Jodi Picoult's books. Those captivate me!

As far as the Hunger Games specifically, when Micah was reading them about a year and a half ago and he told me the premise, I was horrified. It was like the short story The Lottery but with teenagers, and then they hunted each other? What the heck? I just can't imagine a way that would be interesting or fulfilling to read.

I plan to read it eventually because I am a huge fan of dystpoian novels: 1984 is my FAVORITE, Fahrenheit 451, Brave New World, etc. But I do not think they are appropriate for kids or young teens. They are meant to be through provoking, considering what the world will turn into if we do allow Socialist/Communist ideology take over. It is a little disturbing that the Hunger Games has become such a fad. I really don't think people quite understand what the author's intentions are. A friend of mine recommended the novels to me back in 2006 and they were on my list. But now that they've become so popular, I'm wondering if I really will read them. Thank you for giving your opinion. It drives me nuts when everyone just jumps onto a bandwagon!

I haven't been able to make myself read Hunger Games! I'm just not excited about it. Granted, I never read Harry Potter, Twilight, etc either...

I am personally not one to get super hyped about a movie, so yes, I'm seeing it, but at midnight? No, thank you. Haha!

I can't wait to read Taylor's memoir!! Love ya girl! xo

I loved The Hunger Games.

I loved it because I thought it was a good story and because I loved the dystopian genre even before I cracked open this particular book. I loved it because Collins is a talented writer, and I consider Katniss a fascinating character. I think a lot of her motivations are similar to Harry Potter's - protect those you love and fight for what you believe in.

I also love it because once I put my English nerd hat back on, I realized that this novel, whether intentionally or not, speaks to the politics of our world today, brings us to an at least unconscious awareness of the disparity between rich and poor. This book raised a few of the major political issues we deal with today. Collins doesn't just paint us a picture of a different world, she also paints ours in different colors.

I did go see the movie at midnight, but I didn't get dressed up or anything like that. I thought the movie was very well done and really drew from the book rather than trying to make up its own story. I love Harry Potter and I love The Hunger Games, both as an avid reader and a literary critic, because of their stories. And different stories will speak to different people. If this one doesn't capture your imagination like it did mine, then there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Incidentally: did you ever read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo?

I'm totally with you on The Hunger Games! I just finished reading it and don't get the hype. It was stomach wrenching for me too.
